Wolves
It is reasonably well known that wolves will answer
people who attempt to imitate them.
Less well known is the fact that humans
likewise answer wolves, when wolves do the imitating.
Thus an autodialing of your phone
when you are the only one at home
may produce a deep silence, till one slow-
ly clears his/her throat and says hello.
You feel something just amiss, at the throaty style
which sounds almost human, but falls just shy.
So you get alarmed and, anxiously, inquire.
Then you get the click and hum of empty wires.
